When you buy any Criterion DVD you expect a great package, and with this disc you get exactly that. First of all the film is one of cinema's hidden gems, unfairly overlooked in the Oscar race back in the late 90's, and packed with fantastic performances, notably from Kevin Kline, Christina Ricci, and Elijah Wood. Ang Lee's direction is as masterful as ever and the look of the picture is simply stunning, perfectly evoking America in the early 70's. The extras on the disc are more than enough to satisfy, with a great documentary, with interviews with all the principal players (why no Katie Holmes though?), and there are further interviews with the crew, plus all the usual trailers / deleted scenes etc... If you have the no frills UK DVD from the late 90's (as i did), you must check out this disc. As usual Criterion have come up trumps again!Read full review
Firstly, it's a Criterion release. Period. Secondly, it's Ang Lee, who gets the most out of his actors. Thirdly, if you grew up in 1970's suburban New England, you can relate to this film on some level. You knew these people, knew of them, were one of them. It's dark, funny, sad. It shows how winter plays a huge - but understated - part in these characters lives. Everyone is wanting more, wanting change. Also, keep an ear out for the choice of background music. Absolutely not for everyone, but worth viewing.
Good One.
