This CD, Essential Allman Brothers, covers the best of the Allmans in the 1990's and is a collection of very good material, both studio and live, over that time period. I recently got into the Allman Brothers music. Their earlier material from the late 60's and early to mid 70's is all excellent. Their last album from the 70's, Enlightened Rogues, was also good, but their material from the 80's (on Arista) was way below par for this group, so I did not know what to expect in picking up this CD, which is really the best of the Allmans in the 90's. This CD is great; it really rocks. First of all it is over 70 minutes of music, so you really get your moneys worth - and it's all good. The studio tracks are all great. The sound is much more similar to the old Allman sound of the early 70's - not at all like their 80's material - which is a good thing. Three of the four live tracks are Allman "standards" which have been updated - and are off newer live CDs as well. These are also great; however, with a slightly different sound. The live version of Jessica even re-visits Mountain Jam for a few minutes. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone wanting to re-visit the Allman Brothers music.Read full review
