I love big band jazz. I have RCR's other release Mugzy's Move and think it is phenomenal. The Contender combines 1920's-1940's gangster underworld themes with fantastic musicianship and a big fat sound on mostly original compositions. Unfortunately in this case The Contender lacks the punch of Mugzys Move and probably would have been knocked out in a match. Although the music is enjoyable, and I don't resent buying this cd in any way, I guess my expectations were higher after Mugzy.
All the tracks were toe-tappers. A great repeat listen...

Of the turn-of-the-millenium Retro Swing bands, I like this band the best. The songwriting is interesting in its subject matter, and the musicianship is very good. Lots of nice swing-era themes and references. Recommended!
The Roay Crown Revue has been around for a long time. This is just another exapmple of why. You cant just sit still and listen to this you have to move.
