If you enjoy Ken Burns work, this is one of his best. From the narration by David McCollough to the commentary of noted historians Barbara Fields and Shelby Foote, this is a fair, insighful review of the Civil War. It covers the political undercurrents, the numerous characters that played a major role in this tragic event in U.S. history, as well as the strategies of the key battles.

This Ken Burns series 'The Civil War' is a gift for my brother, so I can't comment on quality or any defects. However, having seen this series at least 3 times, I would say it is an excellent production, not really what I would say is 'entertaining' or 'engaging characters'. It is a wonderful and well told cinematic revelation of history. It's a fabulous series; I highly recommend it. I don't know what we'd do without the Burns brothers!

This is one of my favorite documentaries! There are no actor re-enactments or corny battle recreations, just pictures and drawings from that time period, with an amazing soundtrack to accompany it. The only time actors are used is to read the letters of historical figures, to powerful effect. Sam Waters and Morgan Freeman are only two of the voice actors in this series, and their sections are both very moving. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase.

History often lend great incites about our present condition. The Civil War by Ken Burns is but a minuscule peak into the horror and beauty that is the American experience.

Ken Burns did an excellent job with producing this civil war series. Unlike many civil war documentaries today, it was unbiased, straightforward and honest.
