Was this review helpful? (PLEASE PRESS YES OR NO AFTER YOU READ), TKS Maybe not a solid performance as I hoped for, I recently purchased two one for myself and another for a family member who didn't want after seeing it in my home. Sometimes a film like this one isn't for everyone, but those who enjoy theatrical performances may find a higher rate than mine. Val Kilmer really did a fantastic job in a film which takes another level. The 10th musical inside film "The Horns of Jericho" really shares a joy that must be spiritual. "Back To Egypt" 26th musical on DVD delivered nicely. I was good on some musicals and other had lower quality. Val Kilmer - Moses----- Kevin Earley - Ramses----- Andrew Hoeft - Young Moses----- Darian Weiss - Ramses Son----- Laura Kennedy - Nefertiti----- Alisan Porter - Miryam----- Adam Lambert - Josue----- Aharon Ipale - Seti the Pharaoh----- Luba Mason - Bithia----- Michelle Pereira - Yokebed----- Nicholas Rodriquez - Aaron----- Nita Whitaker - Zipporah. There might be scenes not exactly original but for theatrical has moments when you the guest must form your own identity on performance. Others who rate 1* or even 2** will rate accordingly. I saw this musical as an epic struggle in an era that had regretable differences. Surround sound was 4****, exhibition on film on this dvd has 4****, behind the scenes with Val 5*****, choreography was 4**** & please don't look at this DVD as a standard film DVD because this is a theatrical film DVD, a huge classification between the two. I enjoyed this DVD for the first time 4****.Read full review
Although I'm sure this will be championed by the religious right for its subject matter, it is an atrocious distortion of the world of musical theatre. Val Kilmer, who looks decidely old as compared to the rest of the surfer dudes and chicks in the almost totally young cast, sings respectably enough, but he looks worried. So often, his expression says, "What am I doing in this mess?" The songs are generic; any character could sing any song. Emotion is conveyed when people get louder and scowl. The lyrics are repetitious and banal; the music is alarmingly contemporary for a story set in the ancient world, and the choreography is more like a high school exercise class than a dance routine. On the plus side is the energy and commitment of the performers, all of whom try so hard to make something from nothing. That must be so hard to do when Moses' older brother looks young enough to be his son, or when the story of baby Moses in the bullrushes happens when one female singer slides a basket across the stage to another female singer with whom she's singing a wailing duet, the lyrics of which could apply to anything, not the situation of the plot. This is right up there with previous musical duds like JEAN SEABERG - THE MUSICAL and BERNADETTE - THE PEOPLE'S MUSICAL, both of which took worthy material and trashed it. What a pity somebody wasn't around to film those earlier bombs. They'd be so great to leave behind (in a pyramid, perhaps) so that future generations would know just how low one can go. Buy it for laughs. Buy it for someone you don't like. Better yet, tell your local public library to get it, and the whole town can join in the fun!Read full review
When you watch this, you better not be expecting a movie with a bank breaking budget. This is a live performance of a musical. I thought it started out rather slow, but about twenty minutes in, started to pick up the pace. I thought everyone in the cast was goood, although sometimes I felt that Adam Lambert, playing Joshua, might have been a tad over dramatic compared to the rest of the cast. And Val Kilmer, playing Moses, sang decently enough. Compared to the rest of the cast, who all had nice singing voices. I thought the little boy singing the Ten Commandments was so cute. I almost cried. Im being honest. But I guess that would be because I know the story of Moses, and it's quite a journey with the the Isrealite's and God. I thought it was HILARIOUS that the voice of God sounded as though he was kind of rapping. But anyway, Im glad I didn't pay too much for it, because I don't think I'll be watching it again soon.Read full review
I honestly decided to purchase this DVD because we like musicals, Val Kilmner, but also because we are fans of American Idol, and found out that Adam Lambert has quite a large supporting role in this film, which he does. This is a powerful, spellbinding film, even if your not religious, but love musicals. Who knew that Val Kilmner could sing! It's a wonderful, emotional film, and the scenes with Adam in are fantastic! I wish I had known about this film earlier. It is well worth the money. I recoment this film Highly. I'm a grandmother, but my granchildren loved it as well. Lori
I saw this performance live 5 times at the Kodak Theatre. Everyone performer was brilliant. In person the performances were even more specatacular. (Adam Lambert has a solo which was a show-stopper every night. The performance on the dvd was not his best of the show but still wonderful as always.) Val Kilmer was amazing. Although not trained like the other singers, when Val sang you felt that he was Moses; These really were his people and he was their shepherd. It was beautiful to see him in that role as he is always fabulous in every role. (Also, it was fun to hear the women's reactions every night when Val first appears in a skirt with no shirt - that is a beautiful man! Great music, gifted singers and actors and Kilmer is a genius. I was so happy when i found it.) thank you Val, the cast and BCBG Max Azria (the producer). I am fans of you all. Patty KelleyRead full review
