I bought this book because a small child in our family was talking a lot but not being understood. We feared she might have a serious speech defect and wished to get help before she faced rejection by her school peers. This book gave us all the facts about how speech develops and what the various problems were. It did not tell us at every turn that a speech therapist needed to be consulted as some books do. Instead the author gives suggestions as to how paents can handle various problems and help their children. The book is very in-depth, but easy to understand. The happy ending is that we need to wait for a few months before becoming concerned about this little girl.
I got this book because my 3 yr old doesn't speak clearly. It give some theroy behind speechpathology and some explainations. A few activities to encourage your child. I think if your really concerned with you childs speech problem this would be a good read just to kind introduce you to terms and you could give you some tips but, honestly it didn't really help me at all. I know to talk to my kids and try to get them to talk as much as possible. I speak to them at eye level with them. That's about the only helpful things I gleened from the book.
