This device boasts 3 HDMI inputs, along with 1 output to your display. As the receiver's HDMI connections are video-only, you will need to connect the digital audio (your choice of 2 opitcal, and 1 coax) to your source device as well. For analog connections, there are two inputs for component video, three for composite, and four audio (no phono or tape monitor loop). Sound quality is decent; my listening environment was a 12 x 12 living room, with the a pair of Bose 301 Series IIs placed at ear level. A Samsung Blu-Ray with an optical connection was my audio source. Now the caveats...don't expect ARC or EARC support. Some gaming consoles, like the Sony PS4 slim, will require an hdmi-s/pdif breakout box for audio output. If you're on a budget, snap one up.

I tried to get it to work with my TV and DVD Player. I could only get the Radio to work with my speakers. i could not get sound from my TV using RCA cables and HDMI (brand new) cable, nor could I get my DVD player to work with it using a brand new HDMI cable. I tried to get it to work and had someone more knowledgeable try to get it to work unsuccessfully. Because I could not get this other person to look at it until after the 14-day return period I am stuck with it. Very Disappointed and out a lot of money!! Ray Delworth

This reciever does need an optical cable for EVERY hdmi you hooke up but so what... when you pair it to the sony surround speakers it is freaking amazing. I bought a Jensen 8" powered sub for my little living room woth 5.1 sound pushing and after 4 hours of running speakers and finding out that optical was the only way to run blu-ray then it sounded amazing. I have my blu-ray and cable box running through it. and a 46' sony 120 htz tv, with the reciever and speakers... i feel liked I am finally fulfilling my surround sound dreams. UNTIL I upgrade recievers and buy another powered sub.... WAY in the future... this reciever is everything I everr wanted to start out with, and If you want to ask questions.. I stand behin my reciever.. you can call me to help you out.. 2-0-5-9-3-6-8-6-3-9 is my cell.. be respectful of when you need help and I'll be respectful of what I give you. GREAT RECIEVER!!!! Would buy it agwin if I had to start over!Read full review
I purchased this receiver with the intentions on running all my equipment to it using HDMI cables. I found out that this receiver requires an additional optical cable for each component in order for the sound pass through the recieved. I know that HDMI carries sound but this receiver only utilizes HDMI for video. I was told that is because this an entry level receiver. BUT after buying the optical cables the unit works flawlessly & sounds terrific. I do recommend this receiver but as stated it is an "Entrie Level" receiver.
What can I say, it does what Sony says and does it well. It is running a quality "Definitive" 5.1 speaker system with no problems at all. One caution, not apparent in the advt, altho this connects using HDMI, it also requires TosLink audio cables. Who knew? I also have a STR-DE697 A/V unit that doesn't require the TosLink.
