I purchased the Sony Handycam DCR-TRV40 to serve mainly as a playback camera to replace my old Sony CCD-V5 from the late 1980's. Even though the camcorder is only about 7 years newer, it is much more compact and features a large color LCD screen, easy to use controls, lightweight battery, and steady shot function. The camera is pre Hi8 and HD technology but is a great alternative to trying to repair an older SONY and to view Standard Video8. So far, I have been able to easily burn several DVD's of memorable home movies using the camera with a SONY DVDirect Recorder.
I bought this for my Dad because we wanted to look at some of the old tapes from a long time ago and his no longer worked. This was a perfect match!

Oldie but goodie. It is an older model, but I only needed it to watch old 8mm tapes. It still works after all these years. Some pieces are a little loose.
