Trapping Supplies
Traps are built differently to hold a variety of furbearers. Basically, trappers can choose from three different types of traps; a foothold trap, body-gripping trap, or enclosure. The type of supplies a trapper will use depends on the desired outcome, the type of lures used, or whether the right bait was put in place.
What trapping equipment should a trapper own?Trappers need some basic trapping equipment to start collecting furs. When first beginning to trap, you will need only the basics. As a trapper becomes more experienced, so does their equipment. At minimum, a trapper will need the following items.
- Trap tags (if required by state law).
- Pack basket. The bait and lures should be kept separate.
- Wire or cable.
- Pliers.
- Hatchet.
- Digging tools.
There is a significant difference between land and water trapping. As the names would suggest, land trapping is done primarily on land such as fields, in alleys, and near homes, businesses, or buildings. Water traps are set up close to or in shallow water. Usually, water trappers will set cages near bodies of water, such as on shorelines. Supplies for each type is similar, but they both require the entire set of tools to complete successfully.
What trapping supplies are needed for furbearers near water? If you are looking for a furbearer such as a muskrat, you will need to use water trapping supplies. For water trapping, you will need the following:
- Rubber gloves and footwear. They should not be worn while handling lures and bait.
- Drowning devices.
- Walking staff with a hook on the end.
- Wooden or metal stakes.
- Ice chisel, axe, or hatchet.
Land trapping supplies used to catch furbearers that reside on land and not near water. Coyotes, raccoons, and skunks can be caught in land trapping supplies. If you are going to participate in coyote trapping, you will need the following supplies.
- Dirt sifters.
- Kneeling pad.
- Scent-free cloth or rubber gloves.
- Catchpole.
- Pan covers.
Antiquated traps could entice a pet, such as a domestic dog or cat, to come inside. Landowners who were afraid their pets would be harmed often would not give trappers permission to set up traps because of this risk. However, dog-proof traps greatly reduce the risk of catching someones pet. However, a dog-proof trap, or DP for short, will catch raccoons and other furbearers while keeping pets safe from capture.
