Since I was raised in Los Angeles not too far from Olvera Street and love history I can picture what it must have been like in Los Angeles during the second half of the 19th century. It sure wasn't like the Westerns portrayed in the movies and TV shows (Matt Dillon had it easy). Crongeyer's book takes you back to when L.A. city was just a small pueblo with lot's of violent crimes and L.A. county was so vast an area. It's difficult to imagine how much territory the Sheriff had to cover with his limited resources. Before parts of L.A. county were divided into San Bernardino and Riverside counties the early jurisdiction started from the Pacific Ocean to the Nevada border it's mind boggling to patrol that much ground on horses yet! He explains why and tells about that brave men (most of them) that dedicated their lives to Los Angeles County law enforcement. The photos in the book both now and then, help the reader really picture Los Angeles as it was.Read full review
The Book does a great job presenting a concise history of the early days of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office. Very well researched.
