This game is the modern remake of "Panzer General". The original was far more clever. The game is played on an extremely detailed map of the US, the details of even my home town are pretty close. The game does high res 3D graphics, which is both good and bad. The quality is generally good, but I had various bugs from video card problems. Roads would not show at any level of resolution, forcing me to move the mouse over each hex to see where a road might be. Cities only showed at the closest level. The game's unquestionable worst point is the totally lame AI. Tactically, it just tends to go after the lowest defense unit within range, which is so-so. Strategically, it is absolutely terrible. The computer keeps attacking the same area, over and over, without any consideration of whether it can actually win the battle. I have to feel sorry for the enemy soldiers, it must be disheartening to see all the bodies from the last 6 attempts... Despite this, the game is actually fairly fun, once you get used to all the stupidity, like casting spells (special powers) on an Abrams. Shooting, moving, watching things blow up, brings back memories of Panzer General. The end scenario with the Russians is actually pretty good. Unfortunately, you have to suffer through a lot of garbage to get to it. The computer players have no idea of when to quit, so after the initial battles, the game is one long mop-up, at 1 territory per turn. Never mind that your total power is 5 times everyone else put together. If you get this, get the Xbox-type version - they have a cheat code to go straight to the end. I wish the PC version had it, just declare victory at a suitable point. This one is real questionable. Hopefully somebody will get wise and put out a patch to improve the AI. Otherwise, wait for the bargain bin. Get out the old PG instead.Read full review
The game has essentially 2 main components to gameplay, the main screen where you decide to attack, defend, or buy units, that's essentially half the gameplay right there. In the combat mode either attacking or defending it gets a little better... but not a lot. Units are a single vehicle air unit, or squad of soldiers. meaning that unless you just "imagine" that your one remaining tank unit, is actually a whole unit of tanks the game can get pretty boring and unrealistic. As mentioned in the title, the concept is one that has always fascinated me- namely, what it would take for the United Stated to go into another civil war. But the unit figures and bland and unrealistic, as can be easily seen from any screenshot of the game. Overall, it might be good for a play-through or two, but with essentially NO in-game storyline or cut scenes and having no real way to do politics other than NOT destroying landmarks. It just winds up feeling VERY shallow and pretty bland. Enjoyable if you don't mind that, but otherwise uninteresting.Read full review
Shattered Union is a game that you can run with after a very good and brief tutorial. this is a game to played, not collected. you can be the "President of one of 7 geographical factions, each with thier own charactereistics and special powers. It does not pretend to be anything other than a very good RTS/Turn Based Combo, where you can plan and strategize. It is not a "clickfest" like C&C, but you get to blow up a lot of things! The 3-D mapboard is very easy to use with only your mouse. You can stay neutral, gain political popularity and increase your warchest. Or you can go on the offensive and attack an adjacent opponent with scores of weapons to choose from. The special powers are for offense, disrupting your enemy or to increase morale. The AI is challenging and not predictable as another review may suggest. For one thing, they deploy their armies with maximum efficiency. The fun thing is that you can commbine aircraft, armor , artillery and infantry into easily coordinated attacks. You can adjust the difficulty level as you progress in the game. Try the easy to follow scenario editor first, where you can make your ideal battle scenario. Easy to learn and excellent replayability. Bluedukes23Read full review
Nice game but nothing to brag about. Good story line but game play isn't as good as it could be. The way it's set up it's easy to make a move that you didn't intend and there's no way to take it back.
an old but still fun game. one of the best friend vs friend games
