The author Lisa See tells the story of two sisters growing up in Shanghai. The story is told as "Historical Fiction." I learned so much about the society in which the girls grew up, their household, family relations and the sacrifices they endured. The girls make their way away from the war that was taking place in China at the time. The travel they made to a port that would take them to America. Landing in America they stayed at Angel Island Immigration Station, for quite a long time enduring interrogations from the administration, poor diet, and new challengers! Then the surprise of their lifestyles they were introduced to were far from what they had been told to imagine! They worked for the family they were wed into, in Chinatown. Getting used to living as part of a large family took stamina and determination. I learned a lot of history but the story of the girls relationships and being involved in the Chinatown surroundings was entertaining too! I have tried not to give too much of the story away because I think you will find it good book to read!Read full review

Lisa See is an amazing writer. Shanghai Girls is a great read. It takes you from China to California and back to China, spanning the 1930's thru the 70's. It reads as an autobiography and history book. You really feel as though you are there, back in time with this family experiencing the horror and atrocities of communist China as well as the accomplishments of two powerfully, strong young women determined to overcome anything in the name of freedom. I have read Lisa See before and have her previous works. I knew this would be an excellent read and was not disappointed. The end did leave me hanging, until I realized that I had already bought the follow up, "Remembering Joy". Both a must read if you are interested in China's history, female biographies or Lisa See. I was very pleased with this purchase in every way.Read full review
