This is the second copy of this book at my house--the old one has lost its sense of smell! Seriously, the bubbles on the stickers (after 10 years) have no more smell in them, so I decided it's time for another. My oldest is 13, and my youngest is 2, so we have many more Christmases to go, and we couldn't have Christmas without this lovely book. A cute, cozy story about a little bear who smells Christmas coming, and readers can smell it coming, too, with all types of smells to scratch n sniff--candy cane, Christmas tree, hot cocoa, orange, and many more. You just have to teach the kids that only one scratch is necessary for everyone to get a sniff--so mine take turns scratching the dots. You won't regret buying this book--though I don't recommend buying a used one, in case the smell is gone, and you totally defeat the purpose of this book. Christmas is coming--scratch and sniff it!Read full review
I have a copy of this book I purchased about 25 years ago for my now 29 year old daughter. She read it every year and scratched the little smell patches right through. Each Christmas I have bought different books relating to what she had been doing at the time and have written a special poem in each. In August she gave birth to our first grandchild .... a beautiful baby girl! She asked me to buy her first Christmas book and write a poem in it. We discussed what might be best....a traditional Christmas story like "Twas the Night Before or something new, and then she said, "The Christmas Smells Book, Mom. Oh do you think you could find a new one? It would be the best Christmas present ever!" "Oh my goodness.....that book must be out of print. It is so old and I have never seen it anywhere," was my response. But I went on an e-bay search and to my wonderment ....found it! I ordered it immediately and the brand new book was delivered to my door the next week with fresh patches waiting to be scratched and sniffed! I immediately composed a poem on the inside cover to our new little grand daughter about all her mom's special Christmas memories. I ended with a space for her to jot down her own. Christmas morning, amongst tears and smiles, Kelsie opened the new copy of The Sweet Smell of Christmas by Patricia M. Scarry and read my poem and the book to 4 month old baby Sloane Carter. I know she didn't understand much this year.....but she will in years to come. She will follow Little Bear's story as she scratches and sniffs the apple pie, the pine tree, the candy cane, the gingerbread man, the hot chocolate and, her mom's favorite....the orange in the stocking! I have of photo of them together with the book during that first reading. It is "my" best Christmas present ever. Our original copy, scratched through patches, dogeared pages and well worn edges will remain safely kept at Grandma's. A new book, a new mom and a new baby girl will now start Christmas memories of their own.Read full review
This book reminds me of my childhood. I have a 1970 copy that is falling apart and the scratch and sniff stickers don't smell anymore. I wanted my children to grow up with this book and was thrilled when I found that it was still available. The anticipation of turning each page to see what smell comes next was so exciting to me each and every time I read it - I can't wait for my children to experience it, too. This is definitely a book that gets you into the Christmas spirit. It navigates you through all of the things we do to get ready for Christmas - baking pies, making cookies, cutting down a tree, drinking hot chocolate, decorating the tree with candy canes. And what is so awesome is that the smells actually take you there. I would highly recommend this book for kids ages 2-7.
I love, love, love this book. I bought it in 1976 for my daughter when she was 3. I purchased this book again recently for my 1 year old grandson. The book is colorful, the story is easy to follow, and the fragrance labels can be scratched over and over again and still hold their scent. The best thing about this book is how much fun it is to read it to children at the holidays, year after year, after year. It's a tradition in my family already, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to be reminded of their own childhood, and those very sweet smells of Christmas, like peppermint candy canes, hot chocolate, pine, apple pie, gingerbread, and oranges.
My children and I loved reading this book. We wore out the scratch and sniff stickers from reading it so often. Now my grandchildren of all ages and I love reading this book. It is so sweet to see our one and two year olds put their nose to the page and smell the "sweet smells of Christmas" without being told to smell. They just know and love the book. We have grandchildren that pack their book where ever they go! It is definitely a favorite year round!
