My therapist recommended this book. The story relates the odd and often sad experiences of the childhood of its author. Burroughs relates the events and his reactions to them in a straightforward and almost detached manner, which often comes across as humorous until you realize how devastating their effects can be. Burroughs certainly displays the resiliency of a child with his ability to attach to the supportive people who appear at various times in his life, while he becomes a confused child, an adolescent in turmoil, and eventually a remarkable young man. The book quickly captures the reader's imagination. It left me wondering whether it could truly be a work of nonfiction.
