If you want to take those stunning photos of the Milky Way you need a lens like this. First off, Autofocus does not work in the night sky. So you special factory brand lens will not be focused at infinity, you need to do it in the daylight and tape it in place. Second, even the most advanced factory lens, all the big names suffer this, have poor astigmatic correction. This means that stars (light point sources) show up as commas on the corners and edges of the image. Some lenses do it worse than others, seems the most expensive lenses do with the worst. They simply are not optimized for it, they went for corrections more applicable to the normal shooting range. So this lens gives you nice pinpoint stars all the way across. It is fast, so you image gets good exposure before the stars start to show trails from the earth's rotation. Thirdly, it is inexpensive. About a fourth of my über expensive 24mm f1.4 name brand. Now this sounds absurd, but at night, in the wilderness, you trip and can drop stuff, tragic. Remember, you need a really dark sky to do this in the first place and perhaps a rock, stream, mountain, lake, trees or something in the foreground in pitch blackness. Has not happened to me yet, but...uneven ground will catch up with you.Read full review

I own DX Rockinon 8mm fisheye, FX Rockinon 14mm ultra wide and they are crazy good lanses, razor sharp, so this FX Rockinon was a no brainer. Thais lens is crisp and razor sharp even wide open, great bokeh, focuses very close, great for portraits. Overall this is a best bang for the buck! I red some reviews that people sometimes get Rockinon lenses that are soft in some cases, I have order three different lenses and they are all razor sharp! Since they are manual, you have to take some time to nail the focus at firs, but after few shots it gets very easy. The picture quality is excellent. I compare images from my D800 with Nikkor 24 and this rockinon and I can't tell the difference, even at the 300% crop. Only difference is that is manual, 3x cheeper, and IT IS NOT WEATHER SEALED. If you think you can work with that, this is the lens for you!Read full review
