Difficult, dense, and abstruse. Tom Waits has always pushed the envelope for drawing up human character in stories vastly eclectic. Dark, brooding, menacing tales seem to abound in the last 20 years he has recorded with the phrase 'disturbing genius' coming to mind. He is a consummate master of controlled distortion and possesses an uncanny ability to conjure up mental images through sound. While Tom Waits @ times leaves me uneasy ......... nothing he turns his attention to is forgettable.
This is easily Tom's best album of the last 10 years. Tom reveals his many faces in the album, from the beautiful to the strange - he heaps it on. While this would likely be a little overwhelming to someone new to Tom Waits (I would say Bad as Me or Mule Variations are better intro. albums,) it is simply a must have for any established Tom Waits fan! The album includes new material, songs released on compilations and soundtracks, and some amazing and reinvented cover songs. I am particularly fond of the two Ramones cover songs on this album.
Well engineered 3 disk set, lots of new songs from our greatest songwriter, as well as apt renditions of a few standards.

I love this CD. I is the best CD I have purchased this year. I fyou love old Tom Waits it's there. If you like the Tom Waits who gets a little weird at times and take some chances...it's there. I dont' think there is a bad song on this CD. I love it from the packaging to the music! Great CD. If you like Tom Waits or are just starting to check him out, this is the Cd for you!
By far my favorite Waits collection, and a fantastic buy with over 60 songs. The collection is broken down into 3 CD sets, arranged by the various musical story telling "genres" Waits is so known for. "Brawlers" is home to songs about rascals and scoundrels (my favorite), "Bawlers" contains all the beautifully haunting songs from the downtrodden, and "Orphans" contains all the creative indie and catchy weirdness that can't be placed anywhere else. Favorite songs so far: Lucinda, Fish in the Jailhouse, 3:19, Dog Door, and King Kong. Check them out!
