Hiroo Onoda, believed world war II was still going. He could not believe that Japan had been defeated in world war II because in his mind, that would mean that every Japanese person was dead, which was not possible. Subsequent search parties, even his own brother, were unable to find him on the small island. Finally he met a Japanese tourist, whom he almost killed, that he allowed to take pictures of him as proof that he was still alive, and to whom he explained that he was still awaiting further instructions from his superior officer. The tourist went back to Japan and returned with his superior officer who had long since retired. He gave formal orders instructing Hiroo to cease all military actions. It was not until then, 30 years after the end of world war II that Hiroo Onoda finally pulled back the bolt on his still operational Type 99 rifle and removed the bullets. His 30 year war was finally ended. It was 1974.Read full review
Great autobiography (and I'm not usually crazy about biographies). Great story, well written and easy to read. I have had a hard time putting it down. Ran across a brief synopsis of Hiroo Onoda's story on a great website about random and fascinating stories in history and wanted to know more. http://home.nycap.rr.com/useless/index.html
True soldiers account of WWII’s conflict in Pacific. A point of view you may not have been aware of. How an emperor’s power controlled the mind of its people and its soldiers.
