The lens I purchased is in good shape and am using it on my Sony Alpha 6000 with a Metabones adapter. If I had to do it over again, I would purchase a Novoflex adapter since the lens has unacceptable play with the Metabones. (I use a Novoflex on the Sony for my Leica lens.) There is no comparison with picture sharpness and contrast between my Leica M 90mm lens and the Nikon at the comparable 135mm focal length, which I anticipated. There is also a noticeable picture sharpness variation taken at various focal lengths. F8 seems to be the universal best f-stop for sharpness. All in all a very affordable telephoto lens for the Sony.

This lens on its own weighs nearly as much as a D600 plus its battery, but being practically solid metal, you could use it for self-defense and still have a perfectly usable lens afterward. It's not easy to focus it quickly out at 200mm either, nor is it terribly good in low light, but it'll get the job done if you have some patience. It's not quite as mind-blowingly sharp as everyone makes it out to be, but it's at least as good as Nikon's 50mm 1.8G prime lens.

This lens lives up to its reputation for sharpness, but also provides excellent contrast, lack thereof being a common shortcoming of consumer grade glass. The lens is exhibiting a little chromatic aberration, in the extremities, where focus is less than optimal, common for that generation of designs. Handling with the "one touch zoom" push pull arrangement is superb, compared to two ring designs. I shot around 400 test frames on the D7100 and was satisfied the reputation of this film era professional lens is justified. I bought this lens as a substitute for a modern 70-200mm f/2.8 that is in a focal range I use very little, and could not justify given cost. I have been very pleased with the classic Nikon Zoom Ai-s NIKKOR 80-200mm f/4 AIS 80-200 f/4, in terms of its optical performance, but also ease of handling and integration with the contemporary D7100 body. Note for potential buyers - make sure your camera supports the "Non-CPU Lens" configuration function, or check Nikon's compatibility chart. Back in the day these were almost $1,000 - that's about 4k today's dollar. The old mf Nikkors are legendary for a reason. So much better and reliable than the craptastic plastic stuff made today in build quality. Just get one and learn to use it. If you're not blown away by the IQ, at least you may learn to appreciate what pros had to do before auto-everything everything made things so easy. Use it on your digi- or better yet get a classic Nikon film camera and go shoot some Chrome's. Pick up a carousel and good !ens and screen and experience a projected image to see how low our expectations have fallen sine the siren song of digital.

This lens formula is in use for many years by Nikon. Simply put the Nikon Nikkor 80-200 2.8 Lens is one of the greatest bargains in a true pro quality optic with metal construction. The image quality is fantastic and other newer lenses cost much more with a lower overall build quality.
