This pocket price guide for MARX TRAINS is not published on a yearly basis, which makes this a usable guide for a few years. As with the Greenberg pocket guides published for LIONEL TRAINS, you need to know the how a particular item is listed in order to identify it in the guide. That being said, the guide for LIONEL TRAINS is easier to use because of the way Lionel cataloged and numbered their items. MARX, on the other hand, wasn't quite so straight forward in the way they listed or cataloged their items, but the contents list (like a chapter listing) in this guide helps to unravel some of the mystery with MARX train items. It's no wonder that so many MARX train items can't be identified with just this pocket price guide, since MARX probably outsold both LIONEL and AMERICAN FLYER in numbers because of their low cost. Also, because they were the low cost provider, their train items weren't prized and valued like the other two toy train makers; and that also leads to the break-up of items from sets because these were trains that were actually played with (for better or worse). Other than accessories, I generally don't look for MARX trains items, but at the last train show I attended I found a 4586 UP work caboose (searchlight) for $45 which I found to be interesting, and I thought could be restored enough to be a runner (not a shelf queen). Checking this price guide I found that this item in excellent condition was only worth $35. Needless to say, even with the offer/counteroffers with the vendor, I ended up passing on the item. Then there were other MARX train items at the show which I could not identify and value with this guide. Basically, I found this guide a little short of information as compared to Greenberg's LIONEL or AMERICAN FLYER price guides.Read full review

I bought the Marx Trains pocket guide for a handy reference and identification guide of various Marx train products. As a pocket guide, it is excellent. Unfortunately, since it is only a pocket guide it can not be an all-inclusive directory. All in all, as long as you recognize its limitations, it is a great resource.
