We have used a similar Makita cordless driver in our K-12 shop/greenhouse areas. It was powerful, yet safe for younger students to learn to use. Our drill had performed well as both a tool and a teaching tool. However, its days had long been numbered. In searching for a suitable and analogous replacement, we came across this complete, operating set. We'll now be able to continue our programs with solid, well-cared-for equipment. Thank you.

I bought this maybe 20 years ago brand-new. Still works great, but the original NiCad batteried died long ago. I bought a new one maybe 10 years ago and it still works well. I'm going to buy a 3000 MAH battery for this (OEM) for longer life. Because this is a 2-speed drill only, there are less electronics to go wrong (it's jsuta gearing change for speed). I have a newer Makita variable speeed, and the variable-speed electronics board (part of the trigger assembly) died. It cost quite a bit to buy a new part. With the subject drill, no problems, since it's just an on-off switch. The original drill came with a keyed chuck. I bought a Jacobs keyless one. All in all, a great product. It's got plenty of power so don't think that 9.6 v is weak. It's not. The drill doesn't stop instantlt when you release the trigger (it spins down). Yes, instant-stop is a nice thing, but drills never used to have it, and no one ever really complained.Read full review
This drill is exactly like the drill that I have that does not work. I could have ordered parts and repaired it, but I found this one and it is in perfect condition, so it was better and less expensive to just get this one. Completely satisfied. Thanks

old technology built to Makita standards before manufacturing was outsourced to China. Japanese built Makita products are well designed and had rigorous quality control. combined with the newer Nickel Metal Hydride batteries these tools are more reliable with better ergonomics than the mass produced Chinese brands. Not fancy, but tools that will last a handyman cabinet maker for decades. The batteries are still available in NiCad and NiMH.
