This book was purchased for researching how life was during the early days of the Spanish missions in California. This book provided a insights into the daily struggles of survival, the reliance on support from supply ships, and life for the native indians. The early missions were very crude compared to what we see today, not much more than mud huts. Life was hard, and sometimes dangerous, and contact with the outside world was very infrequent at best. California was quite literally on the very edge of the Spanish empire.
