This was a children's show in Japan dubbed into English. It is designed for children to be a hero like adults. Johnny is the only person to be able to control the Robot because he impressed his voice to the Robot. Robots were very big in the 1960 and You can see where Power Rangers got it's start. You can not watch these shows looking for flaws and enjoy them. Realize They were dun without CGI or The special effects like now. Just enjoy it. Like you would the Original Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers. If you just want to tear it down you can not enjoy it's charm.

Great classic Japanese show, juvenile and silly but lots of fun and brings back childhood memories. It's a Shame Shout Factory didn't clean this up or put it out on blu ray. The episodes are blurry, scratched and generally look awful. The series was shot on 16mm film but this is really bad, especially considering the ridiculous price this set is going for. The show: 5 out of 5. The video: 2 out of 5.

I used to love watching this campy tokusatsu tv series from Japan about Johnny Sokko a little Japanese boy and his “pet” robot! who was a member of a world police force called the Unicorns who’s archenemies were the extraterrestrial baddies the Gargoyles led by Emperor Guillotine. I would tune in and watch Johnny’s robot that he “jacked” from the Gargoyles go on to kick some Gargoyle monster ass saving Japan and pissing off Emperor Guillotine in the process usually while the Unicorns and Gargoyles had gun fights as well. Back when I was a kid in the early’70s. Later I used to own some VHS copies of Johnny Sokko and his flying robot back in the late ‘80s that a friend of mine taped off his tv with his VCR unfortunately my then live-in girlfriend tossed them out. Oh, well, there is always YouTube and streaming available and now I have dvd available too! While the special effects may be tacky and low budget but to the little kid in me, they were still pretty cool and amusing. I still liked the campiness of the series.(sorry but CGI back in the 60s)I enjoy simple, silly fare as Johnny Sokko as well as Ultraman partially as nostalgia as well as entertainment and escape from these trying times. If you are into vintage, campy, but fun Japanese tokusatsu entertainment, then Johnny Sokko and his flying robot is for you.Read full review
