O'reilly's "in a Nutshell" series never disappoints. For years O'reilly's Nutshell books have been famous for cutting through the fluff and getting down to brass tacks and Delphi in a Nutshell is no exception. Delphi is Borland's object-oriented programming language that is a superset of Pascal. It is sold as the Borland Developer's Studio in several varieties which differ in how extensive the library routines are. (Borland's Delphi is an evolution of their Object-Pascal and Turbo-Pascal product lines). This book is intended to be a desktop reference for the Delphi programming language. It includes an extensive language reference and a discussion of the Borland Object Model. It also compares Delphi to standard Pascal and other Object-oriented programming languages. Up until very recently, Delphi has been quite expensive and used only by high-end developers. It has also been one of the very few commercial Pascal development tools that was actively supported. The Borland Developers Environment bundles Delphi and C++ in one IDE and can generate code for win32 or .net environments. In September of 2006, Borland released a new product line called the Explorer series. There are Delphi and C++ versions of this product. There is a free version and a more advanced version for around $100. Delphi in a Nutshell would be a good starting point for anyone that would like to learn Delphi programming and Borland's Integrated Development Environments. Delphi is a very powerful language suitable for everything from "quick and dirty code" to professional software development.Read full review
