The positive thing about this book is that it covers a subject that few others do, being a picture book on the Soviet Afghan war. Now for the negatives- the quality of photo reproduction is variable and often very disappointing. Some of the captions label the equipment wrongly, some miss clear opportunities to point out interesting aspects, and one fails to identify what is clearly a subject mentioned in the text. Basically, the person writing the captions has no eye for detail, and a spotty knowledge of the subject. Some of the equipment is illustrated by showing examples not in Afghanistan. The text has faults in description of equipment, and its approach to the history is so simplistic as to be potentially misleading. Don't imagine you are reading a proper history book. I'll give one more positive- the images of the variety of dress of the Mujahideen and of the Soviet troops are quite interesting. The book would be useful mainly to a reader who already knows the subject and can interpret the photos independently of the text and captions.Read full review
