One of the funniest books I've read in a long time! Great introspective on the "American Way" from someone who grew up in the U.S., lived and worked in England for 20 years, and then returned to live in a New England town with his English wife and their children. The chapters (which are relatively short) in this book are the weekly articles he wrote for the newspaper back in England for which he worked as a journalist.while there. They were supposed to be a "view of what it was like to be an born-and-raised American returning home after being gone for 20 years." While some chapters are more sobering than others, they are all humorous and will tickle your funny bone in ways you never knew it could be. Definitely a must-read book. (And, no, this is not a paid advertisement--just a fan's honest--albeit biased--viewpoint.)Read full review

This book is devided into short chapters for easy reading. Every story is great. Once you read one, you will find it hard to put this book down. I don't re-read to many books, but this is one I keep around to refresh my memory of some great stories. In general, Bill Bryson writes about his life back in america after living several years in Europe. Bryson has writen many stories for top newspapers and some of his best stories are highlighted in this book. Check it out.
This was a really fun book to read. It is segmented into short chapters which, of course, range in funniness from somewhat flat and more rant-ish, to laugh out loud in bed at 3 in the morning even though you just got dumped by the greatest girl you ever met. It is actually a collection of short essays, each a chapter, that were originally the weekly posts of a column Bill Bryson wrote for an English publication. He comments on American life as seen by himself, an American who lived in Brittain for his adult life. Something of a picture into what the rest of the world thinks of us, or at least habbits we have that are peculiar.
