Though the beginning of the film is a bit whimsical and perhaps somewhat tedious, the story as a whole is very entertaining, well acted with a great script. Anyone interested in Scottish culture is sure to love it, as well as anyone who might appreciate "the old ways."

This movie is set mainly in the western isles of scotland during the second world war. The war is mentioned once in a conversation between colonel barnstaple and Tarquin. For the rest it's a non-issue. A young lady thinks she knows exactly what she wants and how to get it. She's engaged to be married to the richest man in England. Reality steps in and spoils her plans. Watch for the choir at the cedleigh and an ancient curse. Col. Barnstaple and the captain of the boat have charming performances. I really love to watch this movie, I always feel good after that. I have been turning my friends onto this movie for ages and always ask "How did you like it?" everyone loves it, Patty even said memorably, "What's not to like?"
