James Kugel has given us a fascinating summary of what is known about the sources of the stories in the old testament. For each story he gives the ancient interpretations, and the nearly modern understanding after new archeological finds, and some conflicting current opinions of the meaning of the stories. His reverence for this incredible treasure from the past is awesome. He has learned in depth Greek, Hebrew, and Latin. He has studied reams of biblical commentary written over the centuries. Then he gives us a summary of what he has learned in a fashion, while not easy, it can be understood by those of us without his vast knowledge. I recommend the book to anyone who loves history, a good story, philosophy, psychology, poet, literature, etc. In short it is for all of us. Enjoy!Read full review
