I was very impressed with Robert Pattinson as Arthur, a down-on-his-luck guy who seems to have so many things going wrong. Pattinson plays this role with everything he has. The strongest emotion for me, however, was from his parents and his relationship (or lack thereof). It was appalling that there are parents like those, who don't show emotion and cast their children aside. Rob's portrayal can bring you to tears if you can relate to him. Rebecca Pidgeon and Michael Irving do a brilliant job of non-committal parents. Although I didn't like them for treating Art so unfairly. Art's music is purposefully off key and bad (because Robert is truly talented) but for Art, he had to maintain a kid who's struggling and the way he plays the music in the film reflects that. It was a fun twist that he'd hired a famous therapist to live with him to help him. In the end, Art ends up knowing himself better than he realized and tries to make his own way. I came away with a newfound respect for Robert Pattinson as an actor and I highly recommend this film to everyone. A couple of cool facts: At the 2008 Slamdance Film Festival, it won the Grand Jury Honorable Mention and in Sept 2008, Robert Pattinson won the Strasbourg Film Festival Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Arthur. Oh my Gosh, this is so very funny! Art is just a lost soul trying to find his way in the world and doesn't know how to just grow up and get on with his life. I laughed my butt off and if you like English comedy and are trying to grow up or remember what it was like trying to grow up I think you'll really enjoy this film. Mr. Pattinson is a fine young actor and I hope to see great things from him as he matures as a person. I highly recommend this film.
First off yes - I AM a Robert Pattinson fan. Because of that I wanted to see more than just Twilight to see if I could like him beyond that. And you know what? I do! This is a great venue for Pattinson, but more so, the ensemble of characters is really great. For some reason, I really love his interactions with his mum. I have watched this movie many times now because it also has a great story and lesson to learn. I totally recommend it!
