This is a very good rendition of Giselle, with two excellent principle dancers. Svetlana Zakharova and Roberto Bolle are two very attractive people and both are superb dancers. In my own opinion, there is a better version of Giselle available (on ebay I think) done by The National Ballet of Canada, with Karen Kain and Frank Augustyn, who won Silver at a competition in Russia dancing the Bluebird PDD, from The Sleeping Beauty. The Sleeping Beauty is also on the same disc, but was a disappointment to me since quite a few wonderful dances were cut, (to shorten it I guess), however, Giselle makes the DVD worth owning. I have viewed it dozens of times and never tire of it. Svetlana is not as convincing as Karen in the mad scene, which is everything is this ballet. To be "into" the ballet, one must be able to believe that Giselle is so emotionally distraught that she could actually have died of a broken heart. This version has her commit suicide using Albrecht's sword, as does the Canadian version, but the act of suicide is not used in all versions of Giselle, so the actress must convince you that she COULD have died of a broken heart. Svetlana did not convince me. She IS able to show that she has a weak heart which is also important in this ballet. One of the reasons Giselle remains one of the most performed ballets of all time, is because of the raw emotion it can evoke. I cry when Giselle dies, and I also cry when she has to return to her grave. That's the kind of emotion this ballet and it's music by Adolphe Adams has. The violin solo at the end is hauntingly beautiful, and Albrecht is left at the grave site to contemplate on the tragedy he caused by his deceit. If you do not know the story of Giselle, go to Google and type in the title followed by the word "synopsis" and it will take you to several sites where you can learn what the story is about, and also it's history and it's origin. Another thing, be sure to read these reviews where you will garner a lot of information. This ballet was filmed in front of a live audience at La Scala in Milan, Italy in April, 2005 so it is one of the newer Giselles. It is formatted in anamorphic 16x9 which looks very sharp on HD-TV especially using an HD-DVD player. The sound is also superb with only stereo but also has 5.1 surround. This version is 105 minutes, whereas the Canadian version is 85 minutes, but I don't seem to miss anything from the Canadian version. I like this version of Giselle and am glad I own it, and believe you will too.Read full review
It's a shame this version of Giselle isn't still in print. Nobody has ever acted Giselle more perfectly than Svetlana Zakharova. I've waited nearly three years to find this good a price.

I really like this video. The quality of the recording is excellent. The audio is excellent. It was well danced by both main dancers. I love this ballet and I enjoyed this performance very much.
