I'd like to start out by saying, if you are thinking of reading this book, than DO it! Somehow this book, for me, compares to Bridges of Madison County. It is a short, simple, love story that most of us can relate too. The fascination comes from the fact that this story was written in 1941. The characters, the setting, the plot could all be from today, 2007. And, part of the fascination also focuses around the author herself, Irene Nemirovsky. How could she have been so insightful, so remarkably well versed in the understanding of human nature as to give life to a story plot written then and so appropriate for today, and most likely for tomorrow. The story itself centers around the intimate feelings of the main character, Silvio. He becomes the primary narrator of the loves, infidelities, regrets, and intricate social structure of an insular French village where the characters all reside. Nemirovsky's insight and perceptions into the various workings of the human heart, human nature are truely remarkable. I have also read another of her novels: Suite Francaise and recommend it as well. However, if you prefer stories that are not too long and a book that can be read in one day, than Fire in the Blood should be your first choice.Read full review
I purchased this novel after reading Suite Francaise. Both stories are very descriptive and the list of characters and circumstances are described so that you feel like you have lived in the story. It kind of like sitting around the kitchen table in a rural area with family or friend catching up on local gossip and news. What is more intriguing is that the stories managed to survive the tragedy of world war 2, and were finally translated and published in English. Reading a review in the New York Times about Irene Nemirovsky is why I will probably read all her books as I can find them. The thing that I disliked was that the stories were too short, since I am an avid reader I prefer books that can take days to read. Great books for the beach, on the airplane, and passing along to a friend when you are finished.Read full review
This book was very interesting. The book was in excellent condition. Nemirovsky's life was so sad. Suite Francois was also excellent. I enjoyed both.
