This book is without doubt the most popular and most reprinted of all of Budge's (+ 100) books. Though the accuracy is below the level of proper translation by modern scholars, Budge offers the beginner a glimpse at the text of a most famous and remarkable papyrus known as "The papyrus of Ani." In this Dover publication the hieroglyphs are accompanied by running transliteration and translations directly below them. The "Bell" publication, a reprint of the original 1895 book, is without running scripts, though is somewhat faithful to the original book in having some black & white copies of the papyrus in its frontispiece. Though neither copy is 100% accurate in its hieroglyphic account (missing glyphs, incorrect glyphs, not always in correct sequence, etc.) and outdated translations, Budge brings the body of the text itself into view. This is a comprehensive volume of litanies containing minor accounts from the "Pyramid Texts", deities and their roles in the Egyptian afterlife, texts (with hieroglyphs) of similar documents and funeral rites. This edition is without any of the vignettes (pictures that accompany the text) that are in other books, especially that of Dr. Raymond Faulkner. Though modern egyptologists sneer because this work is dated, that is part of its charm. When Budge "aquired" the papyrus of Ani under questionable circumstances, translating it was a monumental task. Since this work has been revisited by such prominent scholars such as Dr. Raymond Faulkner (see "The Egyptian Book of the Dead" by James Wasserman, Chronicle Books, 1994 for revised translations and ALL the color plates of the papyrus) Budge's book is obviously dated. Even still, it's fun reading! For the usual price of around $10.00 US it contains much information that is still valid and the format is good. To the serious student of funerary documents from ancient Egypt this book still has some worth as a reference of the original hieroglyphic script, as flawed as it may be. Not too bad for a book written over 100 years ago.Read full review
This older translation by Wallace Budge is from the late 1880's. What he lacked in comprehending he simply "made up." While not the most accurate translation, this is a nice version as it includes the hieroglyphs directly above the English translation as well as a rough approximation of what he believed Ancient Egyptian would have sounded like. This book is a useful tool for those wanting to learn how to read hieroglyphs. The translations offer a fascinating glimpse in the myth and folklore of the Ancient Egyptians in regard to their beliefs in the afterlife and the various challenges a soul might encounter there.

Been looking for a hard copy of this book for ages and one trip to Ebay got it in paper back in less than an hour. Hopefully I'll find a hard copy but for now I'm just glad to have any copy. Its a book that translates the papyrus of Ani (Now resting in the British museum) showing the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics text along with the words of how it was pronounced at the time, along with the English translation of the said text. First published in 1895 it has been a blessing to all those who love ancient Egypt and the civilization we enjoy today that they jump started for mankind. I will enjoy reading this book and the nice drawing of Anubis on the cover doesn't make it hard to look at. (My personal favorite Egyptian God and my personal mascot for my many cemetery hunting & recording trips across the U.S. of A. ) Well that's all I can tell you about it for now with out reading it so if you'll excuse me I would like to read my book and travel the same path of the long departed "Ani" who's death some 3000 years ago started this book/scroll to be written on his journey to the afterlife and the weighing of his heart ceremony which I'm certain he passed as Anubis always gives a fair weighing. "Speak my name and I shall live again" Well Chancellor of the ecclesiastical revenues and endowments of Abyclos and Thebes Ani I will not only read your name but speak it once again here and now. So with out further ado I'll close this as I have a book to read tonight. Thank you Herb Rickards Sumas WA. "Oh great God Anubis please grant me a fair weighing"Read full review
