Malick movies are life-in-the-moment films. The stories are usually fairly straight forward and simple. Malick puts the spotlight on the characters and lets them tell the story mostly visually. Days of Heaven is about a guy on the run teaming up with a woman to plot against their employer on a farm in the Texas panhandle around 1900. To help understand the motivations of the characters Malick usually has a narrator. The actors are allowed to improvise. The cinematography is always stunning. Some people find his lingering on the characters slows the pace too much. Malick is for people who enjoy watching master craftsmen do their work. His movies are not for someone looking for fun, popcorn crunching blockbusters. If character development is not your thing, skip the movies of Terrence Malick. Although his war film The Thin Red Line has a lot of action as well. Criterion blu-ray releases are always top notch remasters. They usually come with extras on disk as well as booklets with commentary about the movie. Criterion releases are more expensive but well worth it in my opinion.Read full review
