For Cover Girl (1944), Columbia was looking for a singer and dancer to play Rita Hayworth's love interest, and M-G-M lent Gene Kelly for the picture. At the time, Kelly was new to Hollywood and had spent more time sitting around waiting for the studio to give him something to do than actually making movies. After Cover Girl, M-G-M would never allow Kelly to act in another studio's picture as long as he was on contract. Rita Hayworth plays a small-time performer in Gene Kelly's small-time night club in Brooklyn. When she enters a contest and is selected as the Cover Girl, she attains instant fame. A Broadway producer woos her, and she leaves Kelly to perform in a first-class show. Kelly is torn, because he loves Hayworth but wants her to be successful, which means leaving their happy night club. He debates with himself, sees his reflection in a glass window, and dances with his own reflection, which leaps out into the real world with him. This remarkable alter-ego dance, performed by filming Kelly dancing the sequence twice in different positions, gained Kelly notoriety and convinced his home studio of his true ability. Hayworth's new life is seemingly wonderful. Her face is recognized everywhere; she's starring in a big revue; and a rich producer wants to marry her. But she misses Kelly and the friends she had in Brooklyn. She's got to decide which life she wants. Especially delightful is Phil Silvers' performance as Kelly's and Hayworth's buddy and fellow Brooklyn night club entertainer. Their scenes opening oysters in search of the elusive pearl and singing "Make Way For Tomorrow" are very good. That song-and-dance number was later used as the template for an early envisioning of the title song in Kelly's Singin' in the Rain. The wardrobe is tops, and Hayworth looks gorgeous. I highly recommend this to fans of Hayworth, Kelly, or Silvers, and anyone who enjoys movie musicals.Read full review
For years, I have waited for this movie to come out in DVD and wasn't disappointed. I had taped it from TV, but the quality was poor. This movie has everything! Rita haworth, Gene Kelly, Phil Silvers, Eve Arden and Jinx Falkenberg (covergirl of the 40's) make this a great cast of singing, dancing, comedy and memorable songs (Long Ago and Far Away, Make Way for Tomorrow, etc.). It's great family entertainment and great for Friday night at home with popcorn. Lots of gorgeous girls, Gene Kelly dancing on a street with his conscience ghost-like figure, Phil Silvers at his best, Eve Arden with her comical remarks and of course RITA HAWORTH! This is a must for any fan of any of the actors. Get a copy on eBay while you can. You'll never get it cheaper in the stores!
I have been a Phil Silvers fan since I was hooked on the REAL Sgt. Bilko in the 50s. (I am ancient) I was reading a bio of Silvers and noted that his talents were all blossoming in COVER GIRL. Looking at the rest of the cast, Hayworth, Kelly, Arden, who could resist? A fairly mundane plot about a love story inside a show business cast has been done many times (and probably will be many more) with a nice, fun result. The DVD came out in 2003 but the film was made in 1948, brought a couple of still popular songs, many laughs and tons of pretty girls. Certainly worth the money and time, even 50 years later. I have now shared the movie with four friends and all of them enjoyed it immensely. Staying power, comedic excellence and great dancing with lots of great-looking "cover girls" make a delightful combination.Read full review
A very entertaining movie, in color, with Rita Hayworth the most popular Movie Actress of the 1940's. She can act, sing and dance and is very attractive. Fred Astaire said she was the best dancer, after Ginger Rodgers, that he ever worked with.

Rita Hayworth is a great dancer and actor. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and actors. As one who grew up seeing Phil Silvers playing Bilko, it was great to see him dance and sing.
