This two disc set has quickly risen to be one of the favorites in my sizable collection. It features some of Beethoven's greatest, yet largely unappreciated, works. Not only are the selections terrific, but they are performed with the utmost skill and emotion. Jacqueline du Pre has long been my all-time favorite cellist - Rostropovich, Casals and Tortellier not withstanding - but on this set her talent comes to the fore. She is particularly featured in the two cello sonatas, of course, but she is most notable on every cut on the discs. This is not to downplay the contributions of the other great artists featured on the discs. Zukerman, Barenboim and Kovacevich are equally marvelous in their presentations. These discs are a must addition to your collection if you are a fan of Beethoven or any of the featured artists, or if you just love classical music in general. You'll never be sorry if you acquire these discs.Read full review
