You don't expect much less than greatness from a award-winning, veteran songwriter like John Mayer. This album doesn't disappoint, but don't make you want to keep hitting "repeat," either. At first, I listened to this album quite a few times, learned the songs, got the feel of the album...and then I was kinda over it. It's not like "Heavier Things" that you can just listen to over and over again and love tapping your foot and singing along with every song. This album has a much more somber feel, but there are definitely a few songs that frankly make the album worth it by themselves. The title track is one, with a sweet groove that's hard to let go of. "Crossroads" has a neat sound, even if lyrically it leaves you scratching your head. "Perfectly Lonely" is a great, even classic John song, reminiscent of his first two albums, and "Half of My Heart" is probably the gem on this album, in my opinion. Another song written in classic-John style that really gets in your head and stays there. Overall, I'd recommend this album for sure. If you could ONLY buy one John Mayer album, this may not be the one I'd recommend, but by no means is it bad. You'd be happy you picked it up no matter the circumstance.Read full review

Good overall album with Mayer continuing to explore ever deeper within himself on the guitar. The song arrangement is well thought out, opening with heartbreak warfare. His lyrics are as strong and purpose-filled as ever, driving home his intended themes. Mayer continues to keep it real by "tweaking" the tones of the guitar lead-work, giving each song it's own life and not making it seem as though the entire album is the same song with just dfferent words. Battle Studies is a worth-while listen for anyone regardless of their music preference. Ya never know, it may just open a new door in your world.

Followed him on twitter and in his website throughout the duration of this recording. I loved all the input that he shared and the content of the lyrics and music make me love his craft even more. Just started listening to him in the car on the way to work and made my ride shorter and life just a little bit better. have to listen a few times to really get into it, but with his wk I always do.
