For a while my friends have told me to read Angel Sanctuary and I kept putting it off. It did not look like something that would interest me. After a while I finally gave in and read volume one.

This manga starts off a bit slow, but soon picks up. It is about a boy named Setsuna who finds out that he is the reincarnation of an Angel named, Alexiel. Alexiel was one of the most powerful Angels out there.

Here is a summary from viz:

The angel Alexiel loved God, but she rebelled against Heaven when she saw how disgracefully the other angels were behaving. She was finally captured, and as punishment sent to Earth to live an endless series of tragic lives. She now inhabits the body of Setsuna Mudo, a troubled teen in love with his sister Sara. Setsuna's misery mirrors the chaos among the angels, and their combined passions threaten to destroy both Heaven and Earth.

This manga is not for children. The first volume is about how he struggles with his feelings for his sister. He is in love with her and knows that it's wrong, but he just cannot deny his feelings.

When I read the description I was a bit thrown off about the whole "incestuous love" thing. As I read on I could see how he would fall in love with her. In a world where most people think he's a screw up she's there for him. They are always there for each other. Volume One shows a teen who is struggling with the world around him and trying to come to terms with who he is. He doesn't know who to believe in a world where some want to destroy him and others want him on their side.

By the end of volume one I felt really bad for Setsuna. This poor kid had the weight of the world on his shoulders and didn't want it. His mother really upset me. The way she treated her only son was just so cruel. In this volume it was sometimes hard to tell the good guys from the bad.

As I mentioned before, This manga was good once you got past some of the slow parts. It was worth reading. I would recommend getting the first volume for cheap on Ebay or going to the library.

I loved this series! I first saw the movie but the movie only covers the first volume so I wanted to read more. I wouldn't recommend this for a strongly religious person or a simi-religious person but for a person who has an open mind. After all it has incest, and a whole new look to anything religious!
