THIS IS ONE OF THOSE FILMS (1949) IN WHICH ALL PARTS COME TOGETHER TO MAKE A COMPLETE WHOLE. THIS WAS OFTEN THE CASE DURING THIS TIME PERIOD. THE HEIRESS. ALSO MADE THE SAME YEAR IS ANOTHER GOOD EXAMPLE. GREAT DIRECTOR, SCRIPT WRITERS, MUSICAL DIRECTION, CASTING, SETS, COSTUMES, IT JUST ALL WORKS BEAUTIFULLY, AND THE FINAL PRODUCT SHOWS IT. A JOY TO SEE AND HEAR! ALL IN GLORIOUS PRISTINE BLACK AND WHITE. SEEING THIS FILM ON THE BIG SCREEN WOULD GIVE IT A PROPER JUSTICE THAT EVEN A LARGE SCREEN TELEVISION CANNOT APPROACH. STILL, DEFINITELY BETTER THAN WHAT IS GENERALLY AVAILABLE ON TELEVISION AND THE MOVIES THESE DAYS. LINDA DARNELL, JEANNE CRAIN, AND ANN SOTHERN, ARE WELL MATCHED IN THEIR COMPLEMENTARY ROLES. THELMA RITTER GIVES HER CAUSTIC CHARM TO THIS ONE AS WELL AS THE NEXT YEAR (1950) IN ALL ABOUT EVE. MALE STARS KIRK DOUGLAS, PAUL DOUGLAS, AND JEFFREY LYNN MATCH EQUALLY WELL AS THE HUSBANDS TO THE THREE WOMEN. DON'T MISS THIS ONE, AND GUESS WHO THE VOICE OF ADDY ROSS IS? THEY WANTED JOAN CRAWFORD, BUT SHE REFUSED A NON-VIEWING ROLE! I CAN'T BLAME JOAN FOR THAT ONE! A CLUE, THIS ACTRESS HAD A MAJOR CO- STARRING, VIEWABLE ROLE THE NEXT YEAR IN ALL ABOUT EVE.Read full review
Three female friends who go on a day trip with some underprivileged children all get a letter from another female acquaintance that she has run off with one of their husbands. The movie is narrated by the unseen letter writer, Addie Ross, played by Celeste Holm. And so the three stories of their marriages become the heart and soul of the movie. Deborah (Jeanne Crain) grew up on the poor side of a distant town but married an up and coming businessman Brad (Jeffrey Lynn), whom she never feels that she is worthy of. She constantly feels like he will leave her even though he constantly reassures her of his love. Rita (Ann Sothern) is a rising radio executive who plans a big dinner for her bosses. Her husband George (Kirk Douglas) is resentful of her career which eclipses his as a schoolteacher. And above all things, she has forgotten that the date of the dinner party is the day of his birthday. Lora Mae (Linda Darnell) is a beautiful secretary whose boss Porter (Paul Douglas) is mad about her. The problem is that she is standoffish until he marries her. Then they become the most argumentative couple of the group. She was poor, and he is rich. The money difference also causes a strain. Tying all of this together is Thelma Ritter, who plays Rita's maid and a friend of Lora Mae's mother. Their house is right next to a railroad track, and trains are coming by all the time. Just like in the "I Love Lucy" episode. It is hilarious. This movie was nominated as Best Picture of 1949. It did not win. However, it did win Best Original Screenplay and Best Director for Joseph Manciewicz. It is worthy of our viewing to see how families lived in the "Leave it to Beaver" days. Women were starting to make their places in the business world, but staying at home and making a home for one's husband was still the ideal. Addie Ross would certainly have done that for any of these 3 husbands. Watch the movie to see which one ran off with her.Read full review
This is a very entertaining retro story about three old friends living in what appears to be a wealthy suburb of Boston or another large city. The friends are Ann Southern, Linda Darnell and Jeanne Crain. On their way to a summer camp outting, they receive a telegram from another “friend,” Addie Ross, informing them she’s run off with one of their husbands. As all three review their marriages (and mistakes they might have made.). Directed by the great Joseph Mankiewiez, it is a real treat.

I,m a fan of award winning 1950's movies. I'm pleased with the three actress's Jeanne Crain, Linda Darnell & Ann Southerland. Showing a husband & wife returning from the war was not only unusual but interesting to see them pick up where they left off in the community & with old friends. Has drama & suspense. Fast paced. I also enjoyed the special features section on this DVD. A nice addition to my collection at an affordable price.
I love these old movies! The female characters are beautiful. Each time i watch it i forget the ending and am always pleased and surprised.
