in 1978 this movie was a bit far fetched involves CLONING as the key to the plot~ We see Dr. Mengele a Nazi Doctor (Gregory Peck) hiding out in South America come up with a rather involved plot to kill off people as part of a bizarre Nazi modern day plot but why? Along comes Leventhal a Jewish Nazi Hunter had the plot dropped on his lap and he takes up the mystery of why the to kill people and the deaths. After talking with a jailed former nurse of Mengele who gave dozens of beautiful little boys to germanic couples the plot to KILL people and the little boys are the "center" of the cloning mystery when several of the boys in different countries look exactly~ ALIKE~ cloning was not even considered possible but the plot is now something we could NOW see occuring. The best part is how the movie "ties " all the loose ends of the mystery boys and the deaths and the Nazi dream of a NEW Order together with out totally giving away the plot~ you will like it. there is A BIG TWIST added to this plot I will not give away..just watch it~ Peck is very good as the insane doctor giving his all to clone the boys to continue the insane nazi dream~ ADDED is wonderful Sir Laurence Olivier sounds so German we forget he is not~ ADD Lilli Palmer as his sister. I give a solid 7 out of 10. the End makes the whole adventure worth the watch~ IF YOU FOUND THIS REVIEW HELPFUL PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE~Read full review
Interesting story of a plot to clone another Adolph Hitler! This is a pretty outlandish story line, but goes along with the violence, supposed genius, and craziness that is associated with the stories and exploits surrounding Germany and WWII. In this film, infamous butcher, and pathological maniac Dr.Josef Mengele (Gregory Peck), supposedly has been allowed by Hitler to take skin scrapings and blood for the sole purpose of producing little Hitler clones, perhaps for a "Fourth Reich", or even a fifth or sixth Reich. A Hitler for all times! Anyway, in Brazil at a clinic controlled by ex-Nazis, all parameters of Hitler's life are being replecated. The clones are being surrogated by women and the resulting dark haired, blue eyed, baby Hitlers are being given out all around the world to childless couples of the same age and status as his parents were when he was born. The mothers are weak willed women married to much older men who are civil servants. Couples like these would not have been able to adopt because of the father's age. The only stipulation was that they could never tell anyone that the child was not theirs or where it came from. A young amateur Nazi hunter spots Mengele and follow him to the house where he is staying. He gets a bugged radio with a microphone inside and listens to a meeting and briefing by Mengele outlining the progress of the cloning. There are dozens of boys, all about fourteen years old now. Just as in Hitler's life, it is now time for the father figure to die, so the plan is to start eliminating the fathers. This young Nazi hunter now gets in touch with Ezra Lieberman (Laurence Olivier), the famous Nazi hunter in Vienna. He tells Lieberman what he has seen, and that he has sent proof. The Nazis followed him to his hotel and kill him while he is on the phone with Lieberman. When Lieberman receives the package he mailed shortly before being killed, he is surprised to see pictures of all these old Nazis who were supposed to be dead. He listens to the tape recording of the meeting and Mengele's briefing and plan. He must now find out if it is true. When he does he has to try to track down where the babies had gone and warn the men that they were going to be killed. As he was doing so, he comes face to face with Mengele!Read full review
One of director Franklin J. Schaffner's greatest films alongside Planet of the Apes, Patton, and Papillion. For a director that won the Oscar for Best Director in 1971, he sure isn't talked about much in Film School, and that's a shame because I think Schaffner was an excellent filmmaker that actors adored. It contains one of the best casts of actors ever put to film: Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier, James Mason, Denholm Elliott, Lilli Palmer, Rosemary Harris, Walter Gotell, Uta Hagen and even her student, Steve Guttenberg. I'm not going to spoil the mystery. Just watch this intense thriller for yourself!

Fun film Once I sat next to Mr. Peck on an airplane flight, I said Sir May I share an observation with you about your motivation for the role of Dr.Mengele ? He said politely but with a HIGHLY RAISED EYE BROW, "well, if you must !" I then did a HOW DARE YOUR INTERFERE WITH THE FUHERES MISSION and said now here is where you reached back into your film history and in the same gravely mad growling voice said I STAB AT THEE FOR VENGENCES SAKE THO DAMMED WHITE WHALE Moby Dick, Captain Ahab Mr Peck the last great gentleman star of the Golden era slapped his thighs laughed a grand belly laugh and said, Well Dam you are exactly correct ! Since its free I shall buy you a drink ! I then explained my own thespian background as credentials !
The story was great and entertaining, and the acting was excellent. The film could have been a lot better, if some illogical events did not occur. If one has NO money to pay a bill, how can that person be jetting to the United States from Austria. In addition, if you are shot more than once, your body goes into shock, so you usually become unconscious, and do not have the strength to carry on a heated conversation. Concerning the matter of obedience, if your honored yet demented superior demands that you kill someone, then you do it. The plot was thrilling, but these flaws made the story unrealistic. The fact that cloning was practiced is not far fetched as it is going on today.
