Of all of Mr. Eisner's works I have read, from "The Spirit" onward, this has to be his greatest and most personal work. Unflinching in it's brutal tales this is NOT a feel good piece. Instead you get swept away in the realness of Dropsie Ave., feeling their anguish and disappointments, especially when you find out things don't always have a wonderful ending. Just like in real life. The artwork is, of course, prime Eisner, but it's the stories that makes this volume extraordinary.
Will Eisner transcends the comic medium into a fresh and new perspective. What's really genius about this is that he did it over 30 years ago. A New York native raised in Bronx and then Brooklyn, Will Eisner captures the pulse of the New York City I grew up in. The Contract with God is a time capsule of a nearly forgotten time.
Incredible edition.
