I bought this game since I'm a huge fan of fighters including the KOF series and saw it at a great price. This game was released over a year ago and there still hasn't been a significant price drop at retail -- this should definitely have hit the bargain bins by now. The core game play is solid and entertaining (incredibly well balanced to boot!) but the graphics fail to truly impress compared to other entries in the genre (Street Fighter 4, BlazBlue) and the roster seems like it could be a bit larger like some previous KOF games. I would have preferred the roster to be divided into premade 3-character teams like other KOF games. However, there are two much bigger flaws than these that prevent me from rating this above a 3/5: 1.) Extremely limited single player options. The only modes available are single bouts and a time trial mode (the "Arcade" mode) -- no boss character!? 2.) Lack of players online. I went online early on a Saturday night to try and find some games and there was literally *no one* playing. It seems even at release this had a limited online following and it's kept on shrinking over the last year. Only possibility at a match is to have a friend that plays it -- there were apparently some issues with lag initially, but that's been addressed in the latest patch. I don't regret the purchase, but I'm certainly glad I didn't buy it at release -- this is a 20$ game, not a 50$ game. I've played XBLA games with more meat to them. If you're a diehard KOF fan, then I'd recommend to buy at any price since this is a solid next step in the game's evolution and doesn't disappoint. People coming from KOF11 will certainly be confused but I think the game is a bit more fun to play because the graphics and balance are certainly tweaked to the extreme, *if* you have somebody to play it against. But the lack of extras and a solid single player experience means that everyone else should only buy it once it finally hits the bargain bin price point, and even then only if they have a solid interest in traditional 2d fighters. It may just be better to wait until King of Fighters 13.Read full review
I dont know where to begin, this game disapointed me so much. In comparison to the previous games in the series, there really is ONLY ONE positive thing about this one. The 2D character sprites got a complete overhaul, and look really good. The animation is almost up to par with Capcom's SFIII series. And thats pretty much where the good times end. Now time for the raging storm of suck that this game has to offer. There is NO story mode, the main mode is...TIME ATTACK(?!). Come on SNK, you can not be serious! There is NO boss, the game just...ends. There are ONLY 19 characters (when recent past games in the series had rosters over 30). And they could of chosen the characters more wisely (they cut Mai from the cast). There are ONLY 5 backgrounds...and unlike in the last few games, they are not rendered in 3D. Which is a bad thing for this game, especially since its for PS3/360. And finally, the move set has been degraded BIG TIME. Overall, this game is nothing more than an overpriced DEMO. This game could have been amazing, if they just put another year or two into it. SNK took the series one step forward in terms of the charaters apperances. But took about 5 steps back in terms of everything else. Game gets 2/5 stars, below average. Not worth more than 15 bucks.Read full review
Im a huge fan of the King of Fighters games, Ive played almost all of them and ive loved all of them until I played this one. The graphics are great and the gameplay is good but what i hated about it was that first off, there are only about 20 characters in the game, unlike the previous games where there were about 30, and there missing ALOT of main characters!!! plus there are only a total of 5 fights in arcade mode with NO BOSS AT THE END!!!!!!!!!!! and no other cool game modes.....wtf!!!!!!!....i don't know what they where thinking when they put out this game, the gameplay is cool the graphics are great but those are the only things this game has going for it, SSF4 blows it outta the water.........let's hope KOF13 is way better.
I never heard of this franchise prior to buying/playing this game. After playing it, the game reminds me of Street Fighter in regards to the background and how the characters move and fight. That is not a bad thing nor do I believe this game copied Street Fighter. It is a 3-on-3 matchup in this game. There are 22 fighters you can pick for your team. Controls are smooth and it is easy to grasp a specific character in regards to their style of fighting. Fun game to play to by yourself or with a friend.
Old school game fun to play.
