This is a series that aired in the early 80's on the History Channel. The program gave insight into how the Second World War came into play. It shows how Japan, from the beginning before Pearl Harbor, started grabbing parts of the Pacific to build it's Empire up and to have the resouces it needed to keep it as one of the most powerful countries of the world at that time. As part of the Axis powers, it had hopes to rule the world, but America stood in the way and it's hopes were to catch America off guard and sue for peace with Japan. Pearl Harbor did not go as planned by Japan, and although they did have the victory, they knew that America was not defeated yet. They started campaigns in the Aluetians,Philipines,Singapore,Wake Island and the islands leading to Australia. It also built airstrips and fortified the Solomon,Gilbert and Marshall Islands as well. America had to now prepare for War with Japan in the Pacific, and at the same time going to War against the rest of the Axis powers in Europe. Japan was to be more of a defensive war for now, but slowly wait until it had the strength in manpower as well as materials. The series shows the small steps and then the point where the U.S. was strong enough to go on the offensive. It is another perspective of the war and the narration by Patrick O'Neil gives strength to the series as well. Anyone that is interested in World War II, should watch this. It has excellant footage and is put together that will keep you watching it to the very end and wanting more. The production company did a great job and I see why the History Channel stands behind the series.Read full review
These DVD's are fair/good quality and are worth purchasing. These two DVD's are included in The History Channel Ultimate Collections "World War II". If you own that set you have these. If you do not and are interested in WW2, then you may just want to purchase that big collection. You get 10 DVD's in that set, and it's a much better price/DVD. They are re-packaging a lot of the old WW2 films in different DVD sets/collections so you really need to watch what's in the various sets to avoid duplications.
the dvd's worked fine the information about the war was good to inform me of what went on in the war, I had relation of mine injured in that war, he was a boat diesel mechanic, i know he worked where the Pt boats were used, he told me that, he also gave me his mechanic training manual from the war, I learn stuff i didn't know about the war, it was good Gregg
I bought this DVD for my dad who served in the Navy in the Pacific. He found the DVD to be the real thing and memories came back to him. He said he had seen other films for this era/period of time; however, this particular DVD was done with great effort to reveal the horror and triumph of war and the absolute truth of what had occurred. My dad was impressed with this DVD and I am glad I bought it for him.
thank you the dvd give me time to view the wars in past history , are young children need to understand the value of freedom and this war film will give them
