Actually I enjoyed reading this book while in high school, forty years ago. It was the recent tv movie made for the SciFi channel that re-kindled my interest. I fell in love with the magical world of Earthsea from the fertile imagination of Ms Le Guin. The young arrogant wizard, trying to overcome the stigma of low class in a heirarchy society, attempts to use magic too strong for his still developing abilites. Of course, the result leads to disaster and he is forced to run from a nightmare beast. Sprung from the depths of time before all things had hames. It is by knowing it's true name that one is able to gain power. The more names one remembers the better the chance to become a truly powerful wizard. The young wizard must travel always on the run from the creature of his undoing. It is not until he has run to the ends of the world, almost literally, that he understands that running is not the answer. He must take the ultimate challenge. Either face the creature and or run for the rest of his life. I loved the Earthsea series, this being book one, and have ordered books 2 and 3 as well. I highly reccommend this book.Read full review
