Book is written well and relatively easy to understand. The authors state that the instructions are meant to describe the way they think a guitar should be built at a novice level although immediate and advanced luthiers will find plenty of useful reference information. Pictures and diagrams are all in black and white which sorry to say lack some clarity and punch that we in the Powerpoint age have come to expect from using color diagrams/pictures. A minor nit but there it is. Would have rated excellent otherwise. The book goes through 1) Tools and jigs (what you need and how to build some and maintain the important ones) 2) Design steps 3) Material selection 4) Build and 5) Setup. The design and build covers only a single dreadnaught steel string and classical type guitar contruction. Both type are described simlutaneously with the differences between two being called out in the instructions. No advanced techniques and described. Authors flatly reject use guitar molds, so you won't find that technique here. Just your basic by hand, truly one of a kind guitar building. This is proclaimed as the bible for guitar lutherie by most authorities. It may be the most definitive book on acoustic guitar building but it not the complete book. This can't be the only book on building an acoustic guitar you will need but it should be your first.Read full review
A very comprehensive book that explains in excellent detail the steps required to construct two types of acoustic guitars. It is well written and will be useful as a reference book for both the novice and the experienced luthier. A great deal of detail is devoted to each stage of the build from wood selection, tools, assembly methods and finishing. Alas, the pictures are all black and white. It would be a delight if the book was updated with color pics.

I really enjoyed how this book gets me in the right mindset. I love my guitars and currently own 8 different guitars. I wanted to learn more about the construction and this is a great way to start.

Very nice work, clear illustrations and pictures, it has this nice vintage feel and easy to follow, I haven’t actually started building but just from paging it it looks promising!
