This novel about a 17-year-old lesbian in Victorian England is well-written, but there are no surprises. The synopsis says it all: Louisa is committed to an insane asylum because she does not exhibit conventional "ladylike" behavior. Once there, she and a female attendant fall in love. The plot is so predictable I couldn't give it a higher rating. Perhaps if Louisa had discovered her desire to be a doctor while incarcerated...but no, she's determined to be a doctor from the beginning and is aware of a London medical school that accepts women, so it's obvious what she'll do when she gets out. Since there is only one nice asylum attendant, and the rest are mean, we know the identity of Louisa's future lover the moment she's introduced. A subplot about another patient shows promise, but is left unresolved; Louisa thinks about going back someday to see if the girl is OK, but that's as far as it goes. An okay read, but could have been better.Read full review
