I became a fan of the Dresden files a couple of years ago while on an extended vacation in Hawaii. I went to a local bookstore and purchase a book to read while sitting on the beach under the gazebo. I was instantly hooked! This novel in the Dresden series is very good, equal to if not better than the last two books. Butcher's writing style has improved with every book, and this is no exception. Once again, Harry seems to get involved in more trouble than one man can handle. Familiar characters from previous books show up again to liven the mix. A little slow at the beginning, this book quickly becomes one of those, "I've got to read the next page" books, and kept me up until 4am two nights. While on a subject that seems to be not for everyone due to today's political correctness, this is a terrific read for those who are not easily offended by ideas that are outside the norm. I would recommend it to any reader, and indeed have recently introduced my sister to it (a person who normally only reads romance type novels) and she is devouring them like a text starved creature. Get the Dresden novels, including this one, you won't be disappointed.Read full review
This series of novels is certainly not for everyone, but they are really fun to read IF you like vampires and other supernatural creatures and if you like wizards and witches -- the good vs. evil battles. Jim Butcher uses a sense of humor that is wry and witnesses his knowledge of the pop culture of the 1960's, '70's and '80's. I like that his main characters are striving on the side of Good to help people and to stop criminals -- who are usually monsters or supernatural creatures invading human society -- from continuing their attacks on innocent humans. If you are reading this and it appeals to you, then you probably will enjoy Butcher's books. The TV show does not follow the books very closely, but it is also entertaining in you are into this theme. Although I find the show amusing to watch, the books are better!Read full review
Any and all books of The Dresden files series are HIGHLY recommended. Solidly researched details of mystical traditions combined with the action of a hard-boiled detective thriller expressed with a highly vivid writing style make this my favorite series ever. Not a fantasy world, just a setting that makes you see that there really may be forces and creatures that go bump in the night and that there are folks with special skills that can help keep them at bay.
I couldn't stop reading until I was finished. By far the author's best book in the series, and it shows. I can hardly wait until the new one comes out. Why do authors torture us so with the long waits in between books??? Why??? I know it'll be worth it though.
good read! Butcher spins a great yarn!
