If you Love the Band and want to hear some of the honest history behind how hard they worked to get to the stop where they could write & record their own music you'll Love this book. It's amazing these guys never died on the road with all the driving they did cross country back in the early Sixties with the Hawks. Levon minimizes some of the troubles and explains the demise of their original group dynamic. Albert Grossman sure worked hard to distroy some of our Best performers careers. Wish he would have covered the Festival Express Train Trip with Janis & Jerry back in the summer of 1970 with more details (probably doesn't remember that Rick Danko almost missed the train!).You know when Bob Dylan is your regular returning member, Eric Clapton and George Harrison want to join your Band that you must be doing something right! I only got to see them once right after Woodstock at an All day outdoor Festival with about half of the other Woodstock performers. Sure wish I had moved to Woodstock at some point back then. Go see Levons Barn Show if you're ever up in the area. He has a dinner/theatre/ Jam Seesions on Monday Nights I believe. Sure wish we could see the Rock of Ages show in it's entirety on DVD....Peace, ~Cactus PeteRead full review
One of the Greatest stories ever to be told by a music legend. Levon Helm doesn't beat around any bushes in this book. He states his opinions fairly. He really breaks down the lives and journey of The Worlds Greatest Band (IMO), and leaves us with a sense of fulfillment. Levon is as humble as they come, and his storytelling is as good as it gets. Anybody who loves music will benefit from picking up this book. The Band broke through the limits of what an ordinary band was capable or expected to do. Bob Dylan himself would belt out that no another band is as great as The Band. This book contains insights and viewpoints from almost everyone involved in the bands success and personal lives. I guarantee you will not regret reading this book, and you will not forget the legacy of these great musicians.Read full review
Fast, fun read that takes you inside the fascinating history of The Band. Levon does not mince his words. The chapter that offers a behind the scenes look at The Last Waltz performances and film shoot is — by itself — worth the price of admission.
