The book itself offers authentic textual concerns about Lincoln's apparent continual political shifting on the issues of abolition, manumission, colonization and policy ambivalence. Yet this was Lincoln's style, given the factualizm of the North and his need to constantly build and rebuild consensus. Even the Republican Party was an amalgamation of splinter groups that had been dissatisfied with the Buchanan & Stevens Democrats: Anti-Slavery Democrats, Whigs, Free Soilers and The New American Party. The book is well documented, although some of its assumptions are questionable.
