Reviews
These titles provide background information accompanied by activities that demonstrate the scientific properties and laws they introduce. Each topic is followed by a "Hands-on" activity or two. The experiments include a list of supplies and several photos illustrating the numbered directions. A "What Happened?" follows each experiment, giving the why, how and what of the activity. An additional "Try This!" extension is included for further experimentation. "Close-up" boxes are used to explain more technical information. When heat or sharp tools are needed a safety note is highlighted. A photo illustrating every experiment step would help clarify some of the instructions and more contrast would help some of the images, but those are minor quibbles. Overall, this series is well designed and written. The children demonstrating the experiments provide a nice cross-section of society. Teachers will find these titles a good resource and students will enjoy the experiments. The Web sites included in the bibliography are carefully chosen and appropriate. Glossary. Index.
