I use this NAS as off-site backup and it works fairly well. I live in Las Vegas and have it plugged it to my brother's network in his home in Maryland. Setup was a breeze. The WD My Cloud software allows you to upload entire folders of files at once, which is a feature the My Cloud website lacks. It's quiet. It uses minimal power. The only downside is that Western Digital's online service goes down now and then. In the last month it has gone down twice, but at least they get things working again within two or three days. I worry about the long-term viability of the product if Western Digital ever abandons the service, but for now this product is great for off-site backups.

When setting up be sure to read and read again. Check the wdcloud forum to see issues with it. In my case it works but I am still learning how to connect devices to it to push media so I can not blame it all on the cloud. I have set up a friend to use it remote, still testing. I have notIf I were to do it again I would have opted for a more high end device and added hard drives. Don't buy this if you expect a plug and play experience. My set up is the cloud is plugged into a router running dd-wrt. Laptops, Nvida Shield, connect wireless. Be sure to DYOD before buying.

Serious piece of mind is now affordable and so easy to set up. Im sure I could send this to my parents without committing to a long tech-support phone call. Ive used external HDD backups before but this network attached version is much better. Almost immediately after plugging this into my router it showed up on all of my connected devices, no long installs or tools needed. The next step, installing the software (probably not needed but gives more control and options) was also a breeze. I look forward to using this as a central hub for content that I want on all devices and I feel confident that this is the perfect solution. Between smart phones, tablets, and other computing devices, getting the same data on all can be a chore. This one device seems to have alleviated the need to have the same third party app on all devices set to sync all the time. Even more importantly, the fine print on services like DropBox and SkyDrive leaves much to be desired. This personal cloud and auto backup is such a good deal that I am only upset I waited as long as I did to buy it. If you can benefit from having easy access to data across devices and want simple backup, this is for you. My reason for the 4/5 on performance is that I expected faster WiFi transfer rates considering I am using a very new a/b/g/n x2 adapter with a very new and fast router. When I saw the transfer rates I was a bit disappointed but I do not expect that to be an ongoing issue for incremental transfers and backups.Read full review
The unit is quite simple and easy to set up. The software is also relatively easy to set up, but can be tricky when you are using both PCs and MACs. It has not interfered with the wireless router and I am able to use other units while downloading to it. It does take a long time (12 hours or more) to copy files via the Internet. It is even slow downloading with a direct hook-up. All told, it is a good unit, it is inexpensive and the files are stored right in my home, not off site with someone I don't know nor never have seen. I would recommend it.

The NAS is in operation now using it to back up all the important things in one private directory and multimedia in another directory. The other computer has access to the backed up things for its' use. The tablets & smartphones have access to the multimedia along with the TVs through Tivo/Plex. Some of the WD software seemed a bit confusing. I didn't use much of the software from WD other than to marry the NAS to the network. Their software didn't offer what I needed to backup and organize the multimedia. I have used a very good diverse backup/sync program for years called Goodsync. The drive is quiet and works quite well. The only fault I had with the whole deal was that the drive was packed in the right size box but the drive was flopping around loose in the box due to insufficient packing. I was very concerned whether the drive would work or not.Read full review
