I initially borrowed this book from the public library, and after spending an hour or so with it, I found myself taking down notes of important titles of books that I would most likely want to read. I quickly realized that this is a book that I had to own The author, Susan Wise Bauer has gone to some lengths to list reading material that is actually worth reading . Like “The Annotated Novel List” that includes “Don Quixote”, “The Pilgrim’s Progress,” Gulliver’s Travels,” and many more. She writes a short summary of each novel that will give the reader a good indication of what the novel is about. There are also lists that include history, biography, and poetry. A great book for anyone interested in continuing education.
I would describe this book as the guide for adults who want to "home school" themselves. It is a book about reading, not speed reading, but learning to read and enjoy what many would classify as "tough reading." Learning to read and enjoy classic books like Don Quixote and Shakespeare's writings. Even if you went to college, but over the years feel as if your mind has gotten lazy; if you want to discipline your mind and review the basic tenets of making literary judgements about what you are reading this is a book for you. If you are sick and tired of reading nothing but the newpaper, magazines, and watching tv, this is the book for you. In fact, if you want to be able to understand how contemporary work connects to the past this book is for you. This book is for those who want to do something about disciplining their mind and enjoying it. Written from a classical education perspective. I recommend buying it so that you don't have to continually try and get the library's copy. Get your own!Read full review
